Vintage Hair Tutorial - 1920s/30s Faux Bob
This week we’re heading a little further back in time to the 1920s and 30s. This look works perfectly when paired with my classic knot turbans and headbands.
You will need: A rat-tailed comb, hair grips, soft bristled brush, sectioning clips, hairspray and a curling tong or your preferred curling
Step 1: Section off a fringe, if you already have a fringe just add in a little more hair as this will become a big swooped fringe so you need a decent amount of hair. Clip this section up and out of the way so it stays separate.
Step 2: Curl your hair, this style definitely needs a curl so use your favourite method to create curls. Don’t worry if your hair doesn’t hold a curl well as they are going to be pinned in place.
Step 3: Now start on the back of your head, separate the hair in front of each ear and keep it separate from the rest. Then create a zig zag line of hair grips across the back of your
Step 4: Take each curl and twist it up to the line of hair grips. Pin the curls in place one at a time. Don’t worry about being too neat you want to be haphazard in the way you pin, as this will create more body and a softer look.
Step 5: Now take the 2 sections you put aside (in front of each ear) and give them a gentle backcomb to create some volume.
Step 6: Twist up the section on the left (that will sit under your fringe swoop) and pin it in place so the bottom roughly lines up with the curls at the back.
Step 7: Then on the opposite side, twist the hair backwards and pin it in place behind your ear.
Step 8: Now go back to the fringe section that’s clipped up. Backcomb the underside and start shaping the hair into a swooped S-curl.
Step 9: Once you have the shape you want, fix the section in place so it gently frames your face.
Final Look: This is such a stunning style and while it does take a bit of practise to master it’ll be worth it.
Alternative version: If you want to save yourself a few steps and some time why not team this style with an era appropriate turban style like my ‘Classic’ style turban, perfect for 1920s and 30s looks.
Do steps 1-4. Then jump straight to step 10 & 11.
Step 10: Put on your Sarah’s Doo-Wop Dos turban. Now take the 2 sections you put aside in front of each ear and give them a gentle backcomb.
Step 11: Pin each section in place so they frame your face.
