Try My Party Hat Tutorial!

Step by step vintage party hat diy

Follow my step by step guide to make these super cute party hats with lots vintage style! These fun little vintage hats are great for NYE, Eurovision parties, birthdays or any event where there’s going to be some fun dressing up. I made mine for a New Year’s Day lunch with friends and they went down a treat!

My version of these hats are based on the little paper party hats we all remember but I made mine out of stronger (glitter) card to give them more structure and hopefully mean they can be worn more than just once and I’ll get more use out of them. I looked at lots of great vintage photos before starting this project and found some gorgeous NYE photo shoots from the 1920s, 1940s and 1950s, some of which you can see above or check out my Pinterest account for more vintage headwear photos here.

To complete this little project you will need the following items: card, glue, decorations, ribbon.

Optional: Any extra trims like ruffles or ric-rac that you might wish to add.

Steps:

1. Start by cutting out the party hat shape (a sort of semi-circle) as seen in pic one. This shape should create a neat little cone shape when rolled up.
2. Now roll it into a cone and glue in place along the seam making sure it’s holding in place.
3. Decorate. This is the fun bit so why not go for it, add Pom Poms, Ric Rac the skys the limit!
4. Add some ribbon for the ties. I made mine long so I could tie them in big dramatic bows but you could just use thin elastic if you prefer, I just thought ribbon was more fun. I glued the ends of the ribbon to the inside of the hat but you could also gently sew it in place.

Once all the glue is dry your hat is ready to wear and the party can begin!
