Creepy Crafting: Turning a £1 toy into a bag! 🦇

Bat handbag

A little spooky upcycle project.

A couple of weekends ago I walked around my local area’s jumble trail (like a car boot) with a neighbour and found some gems! Along with some 50p horror dvds, a vintage sewing box and some chilli jam I also found an adorable bat toy for just £1!

As soon as I realised it could hang upside down I knew I wanted to turn it into a handbag so with a heatwave in full swing last night I sat in front of my fan and made a start.

Steps:

Step 1: First I cut a slit in the back of the toy.

Step 2: Then I took out about 2/3 of the stuffing, leaving enough to keep the shape of the bat.

Step 3: I then sewed a little pouch of scrap fabric to be the lining on my machine.

Step 4: Then I clipped the lining to the lip of the opening to check it fitted.

Step 5: Once I was happy with it I hand stitched the lining in place as I felt it owuld be too tricky on my machine.

Step 6: I was planning to use a zip but I couldn't find one at home so I used some velcro I had instead. It worked surprisingly well and didn't take too long to stitch on.

Step 7: I then harvested the strap off another bag as I wanted to add a long strap to use alongside the handle the toy already had.

Step 8: I lightly hand stitched the strap in place and tried it out to see if it worked.

Step 9: Then when I was happy I sewed it properly in place by hand.

Final Pics:

I was pretty pleased with how this turned out and I will definitely use it as it can hold my phone and a few other bits. I'm trying to make things that bring me a bit of joy in this messy year and this definitely puts a smile on my face.

Project time: 1 hour.

Cost: £1 for the toy. I had the lining fabric in my scrap box and I already had the Velcro so I decided to use that and safe money on buying a zip.

Stay spooky.
