Vintage Hair Tutorial: How To Wear Your Hair With A Headband.

Vintage headband tutorial

My vintage style headbands are a great and easy way to style your hair and add a fun vintage touch to your look.

They were influenced by the way women in the 1940s tied their hair scarves but mine are made from stretchy fabric with the knots sewn in place so there’s no fiddly tying involved! The headbands fit an adult head size approximately 20” to 24” and the stretch fabric helps accommodate a bigger or smaller head size and less or more hair. If you are unsure of your head size you can find my handy measuring guide here.

Hairstyles:

Bun: This style is a great quick style and requires little to no hairstyling skills. It fills the crown space of the headband really well and is one of my favourite styles to wear as it takes just minutes!

Ponytail: Not only does this style look super cute but it’s quick and easy to do. Plus, it’ll help the headband stay in place and not ride up. There’s no need to create one this fancy, a normal everyday ponytail will look just as cute and work just as well.

Twist or French Pleat: This method is a great style for most lengths but is particularly good for longer or thicker hair. If you have very thick or heavy hair you can put your hair in a low ponytail first before you twist it up to help you get it all in place.

For this hairstyle you want to simply twist up your hair and secure it in place along the pleat fold line, as shown on the left hand photo below, with a few hair grips. This style looks really nice, fills the open top of the headband and helps the band part sit flat at the back of your neck.

Plaits: This is another style that works for medium length to long hair and works especially well for thick hair.

Step 1: Part your hair & create 2 plaits.
Step 2: Cross the plaits over on the top of your head and pin them in place with hair grips.
Step 3: Slip the headband over and fix in place.

Hair grips: If you need a little extra hold for your headband you can add a couple of hair grips to help keep it in place. Just pop a grip either side of the headband knot, this adds hold but also hides the grips and keeps them covered. Or you can cross them at the back of the band, see pics below for an illustration of the placement.
