Knot Choices
On today’s blog post I’m looking at the catalogue of knots that I offer for my vintage style headbands and turbans. I started my sewing business back when I was a vintage hair and make-up artist and sewing was just a side hustle. I started out with just one knot style, the Scrunchie Knot, back in 2016. Over time I focused more on the sewing side of the business and stopped hairstyling and started to create lots more styles.
As you can see from the images above my headwear is heavily inspired by the 1940s and particularly what civilians and factory workers were wearing to cover and protect the hair. Over time I’ve added styles that hark back further in time to the 1920s and 30s. So let’s take a look!
Small: A fantastic knot for everyday wear, this discreet little knot is a great one whether casual of dressed up. It’s one of my lower knots and very popular as both a headband and turban.
This is one of my newest styles and offers me a chance to combine colour and pattern, it’s quite a low knot, sitting flat to the head but is great style as it can be matched to a variety of outfits. I tend to make the plaited part with off cuts of fabric left over from other styles so this design even helps me reduce my waste!
Classic: This style always has a 1920s/30s feel to me, especially when made in velvet. It’s another low knot style and is great for keeping your hair off your face in summer or can be easily dressed up with a brooch for some added glamour as an evening look.
Princess: This style replaced an older knot that was a bit wider, I wanted something more wearable for everyday and this style was born. My designs are stretchy, comfy and created to help add a little easy vintage style to your wardrobe.
Landgirl: This knot was inspired by the 1940s Landgirls as I live in an area where there’s a lot of history of women in agriculture. The Landgirl knot is available in my signature stretchy jersey styles as well as a newer cotton design with an elasticated back that is my version of the 1940s duster cap style. That design will be launching at the end of July.
Slouchy: This is another of my early designs and a firm favourite with many of you. It’s got some great height and although it’s another everyday piece it certainly adds a little extra flare to your look.
Workwear: Generally seen as the bow design, this style was specifically inspired by images of the way women during WWII tied their headscarves when working in factories. This is such a popular design and one I really love creating.
Rose: This flower shaped piece is generally only available on my ‘made to order’ listings and is based on an original 1940s hat pattern (see my inspiration pics). I often recreate authentic 1940s headscarves and turbans in my pieces and I really enjoy researching and finding new inspiration.
Twist: Another old fave that I discontinued and then bought back. This style reminds me of the the iconic donut hats of the 1940s and is such an easy to wear style and looks equally good with your hair up or down.
Scrunchie: This is my oldest knot and still a favourite for me and lots of my customers. The style is meant to replicate a hand tied headscarf and I started making these so I didn’t have to tie mine and mess around with getting them to stay in place. This is quite a high style but still comfortable and easy to wear.
Tilt: The biggest and most dramatic of all my knots, the Tilt Knot is based on a couple of original 1940s hats I saw. I wanted this style to have a really glamorous feel and be a true statement piece.
You can find all these knots on my my ‘made to order’ listings for headbands and turbans. These listings allow you to choose your favourite knot as well as the colour you prefer and are then sewn up. Or you can browse my ‘ready made’ styles, headbands start from just £20 and turbans from £30. All my styles are exclusively handmade by me in my studio in the UK.
