5 Ways To Style A Vintage Turban
This little guide is here to help you get the most wear out of your Sarah’s Doo-Wop Dos turban. With some simple styling tricks you can change up your look and still make it out the door on time as these styles are both quick and easy!
I’ll be restocking the website with exciting new turban colours and styles on Saturday 27th May at 12 noon and you can always find my website staple colours here.
The photos below were all taken on the same day, with my freshly washed hair and there are a few basic styling tools I used to create these styles. You will need: Rat-tail comb, soft bristle brush, hair grips, fine hair net, curling tong, hairspray, elastic hair bands and that’s it!
1. Covered Hair.
Covered Hair: Lets start out with the easiest, this one requires no styling as you simply cover all your hair with the turban. Sarah’s Doo-Wop Dos turbans are stretchy & pre-tied, with the knot sewn in place, making them very easy to put on. I like to leave a little bit of my hair showing at the front but it’s totally up to you if you do the same. This is the perfect style for lazy hair days and as my turbans also fit over a flat pin curl set or small rollers you can use them to cover and protect your curls too.
Skill level: Very, very easy!
Time: 2 minutes.
2. Betty Bangs.
Betty Bangs: Moving on to a style for when you have a little more time and a curling tong to hand. For this I simply popped my hair up into a messy bun and then curled my natural fringe into Betty Page style bangs. If you don’t have a blunt cut fringe you could try a clip in one as these work well with turbans. I then popped my turban on so there was no need to style the back of my hair but this style works well with my headbands too so if I was doing this with one of them I would just do a neater bun.
Skill level: Easy.
Time: 5 minutes.
3. Rolled Fringe.
Rolled Fringe: This has been my go to look for years and I really do think it’s an easy look to do once you have mastered it! I have a vintage hair tutorial on how to create this style that you can watch here but the basic idea is to create a big roll and then pin it place with hair grips. This style can be fiddly the first couple of times you try it but once you are used to doing it, it’ll be a great addition to your vintage hair styling repertoire. And again there’s no need to bother styling the back of the hair, just pull on the turban and you are done. Great for events or just everyday.
Skill level: Easy to moderate.
Time: 5 to 10 minutes.
4. Plaited Fringe.
Plaited Fringe: A variation on the above. This one is maybe a bit quicker to do as there’s no need to be able to create a roll, instead you make a plait and twist it around at the front of your head to create a fringe, pin it in place and then add a hairnet for hold. So again there’s no need to style the back of your hair, it can just be popped in a quick ponytail or bun, as the turban will cover it. I love a fringe style as it’s an easy way of doing a vintage hairstyle without the fuss. You can watch my handy YouTube video for more styling tips on creating this plaited fringe here.
Skill level: Easy.
Time: 5 minutes.
5. Hair Down.
Hair down: This one definitely takes more effort but a lot of people don’t realise turbans can be worn with your hair down. I have to admit I did cheat here and used a half wig to create this look rather than actually curling my hair, as I wanted fuller curls and my hair is quite short these days. One of the great things about a turban though is it hides the wig line so I only needed to style my fringe for this look and let the wig and the turban complete the style. However, I could have also created this look by curling my hair with a tong or doing a vintage style wet set before brushing out the curls into a 1940s hairstyle. This look is perfect for vintage events or just when you feel like being a bit fancy!
Skill level: Moderate to difficult.
Time: 20 minutes if styling a wig, longer of curling your hair.
Hopefully these styles are useful and give you some fun ways to wear my vintage style turbans. You can shop my designs here and don’t forget to tag any pics over on Instagram using @sarahsdoowopdos.
