How To Style Your Hair Under A Vintage Turban
A question I get asked quite a bit is ‘How do I wear my hair under one of your turbans?’ and it’s a great question so I thought I’d do a full post on it. If there’s any other helpful topics you’d like to see me cover in the future please do leave me comment on this post.
My vintage style turban bases are designed to fit on an adult head size approximately 20” to 24” and the fabric I use is stretchy to accommodate a bigger or smaller head size and less or more hair. If you are unsure of your head size you can find my handy measuring guide here.
Hairstyles:
Bun: This is the style I personally do the most, I have bobbed hair but this hairstyle works with all hair lengths. If you have longer/thicker hair I would suggest doing a lower bun to help the cap part of the turban sit better. Remember the bun doesn’t have to be neat, it’s not going to be on show!
Twist or French Pleat: This method is a great style for most lengths. If you have longer or thicker hair try putting your hair in a ponytail first before you twist it up to help you get it all in place. For this hairstyle you want to simply twist up your hair and secure it in place along the pleat fold line, as shown on the right hand photo below, with a few hair grips. This style helps keep the turban flat on the top of your head as it doesn’t add extra bulk
Plaits: Best for medium length to long hair and works especially well for thigh hair. Step 1, part your hair & create 2 plaits. Step 2, cross the plaits over on the top of your head and pin them in place with hair grips. This style is great for adding shape to the
Short/fine/no hair: If you have short hair or very fine hair you can put one of my turbans straight on your head & you may just want to use a couple of hair grips on either side of the knot to give it a little extra security, I have an example of hair grip placement below.
If you have no hair the turban will still fit you but if you want a custom smaller size for a closer fit you can always email on sarahsdoowopdos@gmail.com and I can adjust a design for you. My fabrics are soft and comfortable to wear but I also have some lightweight fabrics like my leopard print cotton that might be particularly suitable. My turbans are made of good quality jersey fabrics so have good hold and don’t slip off.
Hair grips: If you need a little extra hold for your turban you can add a few hair grips to help keep it in place. As the photos below show you can pop a grip either side of the turban knot, this adds hold but also hides the grips and keeps them covered. Or you can cross them at the back of the
