3 Disney Outfits On A Budget!

After a tough few months we decided we needed a little bit of magic and took a quick trip to Disneyland Paris. We found a cheap flight, great value hotel and then it came to outfits. As I was on a tight budget these needed to fabulous but frugal so I decided to dive into my fabric scraps and see what I could do. The total cost of my outfits ended up being just £16!!! So, read on to see what I made.

My tips:

• Base the looks on clothes you already have in your wardrobe
• Check out charity shops/thrift stores for any little extra bits you may need
• Use accessories to pull it all together
• Make an evening of it. Put on a Disney film and get organising/sewing!

Outfit 1: Ghost Mickey & Minnie Mouse 

I wanted to do something Halloween themed for our first evening having drinks in the Disney village and seeing the decorations. I made these little patches with felt left over from my vintage style witch hats (very appropriate,) and other scrap. I then added them to an orange, plaid vintage jacket that I already had in my wardrobe and a £6 plaid shirt that I found in a charity shop for my partner Tom, so we had matching looks. I teamed my jacket with me-made trousers and of course one of my handmade headbands. 

Make time: 2 hours, these were fun to do but with fiddly detail.

Cost: £6, just for the shirt.

Outfit 2: Phantom Manor (ride) Disneybound

As the weather changed so massively before our trip (from rainy and cold to very warm & sunny) I had to rethink my packing. I was going to take a few Halloween jumpers that I already had, but that would have been far too warm! Instead, I decided to have a look around some local charity shops for some ideas. I ended up finding a curtain that just gave me gothic/Halloween vibes and decided to sew up a Phantom Manor look, my fave ride in the park. I was originally going to do a 1950s style skirt but the fabric was quite stiff and it wasn’t looking right so I pivoted and and went for a more Victorian looking style, inspired by the outfits worn by the cast members who work on the ride. I paired the skirt with a black t-shirt and cardigan with a Phantom Manor badge, all things I already had in my wardrobe, and wore old canvas shoes which I covered in spare spiderweb fabric I had in my stash.

Make time for skirt : 5 hours (due to a change of design halfway through and having to hand gather ruffles!) This was a great zero waste project because the scrap was used in the ruffles/waistband and even for a matching headband based on my Landgirl headband.

Cost: £10 just for the curtain fabric.

Outfit 3: Pumpkin T-shirt & Headband

This was a super quick project and done with a cardigan I bought for Halloween last year but didn’t wear as the quality wasn’t very good. I loved the print but the weight of the fabric was fair to thin for a cardigan. For this I just turned it back to front and sewed it closed, overlocking the seams. I then altered the neckline and shoulders to fit better, then hand stitched the neck to finish it and get rid of any sagging. I also shortened the top and used the last bit of fabric to make one of my easy to wear pre-tied headbands with a Slouchy knot, (so another zero waste project!)

Time: 1 hour, mainly adjusting the fit of the top.

Cost: Already in my wardrobe so was £0.

Additional Item: Mickey Mouse Jack O’Lantern Pumpkin Bag

This was actually the first item I made. I wanted a new bag but I also wanted to save the pennies so decided to make one out of scrap fabric. I wanted to make a pumpkin but the only orange fabric I had was this vintage bedsheet, however, it ended up working brilliantly. I based the bag on an old Mickey Halloween popcorn bucket I have in my office. The features are made from scrap black felt and cotton. I already had the snap fastenings and I quilted the bag to give it a 3D pumpkin feel, which I loved. 

Time: A couple of evenings so 5 hours in total.

Cost: Made completely of scrap, £0.
